What is one thing that comes to your mind as a shortcoming on dyslexia?
I am a high-profile lawyer and proud dyslexic. That’s two occupations on one man. People wonder, or rather, society wonders. There is a community growing now and dyslexics have a tribe. There is a responsibility on the settlers of the community to raise a voice on dyslexia. To every dyslexic, there is an advantage that should cover up academic lapses. It takes me days to read through a two-pager article, so you know what I’m talking about. You are the wonderland and the society is the marketplace to decorate your new found land. It’s your responsibility to find the right panache to make your wonderland beautiful and attractive. I am a careful listener and I trained very hard on that which I have, to become a dexterous listener. That was my only way out of school, university, and a successful career. I had friends that found it insane to buy audio summary of court cases over going through such humongous pages of cases. That’s not what a judge that decides on several cases in day, wants to hear. All he cares is the pith of the case. They would read and read and by the time they get to the 150th page, would have forgotten what was on the 1st page. I had a study group where all that’s done therein is discuss and it helps. I have a dyslexic son and I am patient with him because I know better. He draws very good. I encourage and support him to train hard at excellence. If he ever tells me, that is what he wants to make for a career. I would tell him- “it’s a closed case son, how else can I support you?”
